Everyone knows that this year’s election is a big historical moment. Marc Lendler will discuss significant shifts in voting patterns among those who participated in the 2024 election. Did Republicans win a larger than normal slice of the Black vote and/or the Hispanic vote? What role did Trump’s legal difficulties play? What new trends emerged in states that might indicate a lasting switch in party affiliation? And what about the biggest issues: the economy and the border? Finally, was there one main thing that determined the outcome of the presidential election?
Marc Lendler, Professor Emeritus of Government, received his Ph.D from Yale and taught at Smith College for 25 years before retiring in 2022. His course topics included National Elections, The Presidency, and the First Amendment. He is returning to Smith this fall semester to teach the Elections course. Lendler’s writing has focused on civil liberties, including a 2012 book Gitlow v. New York: Every Idea an Incitement, an analysis of a landmark 1925 Supreme Court decision.
